Saturday Spotlight: Bras and Body Image

Hello Ladies,

Our Saturday Spotlight this weekend is a new bra blogger who recently emerged on the scene:  Bras and Body Image!  As the title of the blog implies, there are several excellent lingerie and swimwear set reviews as well as discussions of how bras and body image interrelate.  The post on her bra size revelation mirrored how I felt when I was properly fitted, and I’m sure many of you can identify with the emotions she experienced.  As a 30JJ/28K, she is on the higher end of the cup size range and can provide some insight into how bras will look as they scale up in size.

Recently, she’s reviewed the BiuBiu Vanity Fair (pictured above) which I have also reviewed in the past.  As many of you know, we’re hoping to carry BiuBiu in the store in 2013, and hers is yet another flattering review of the fit and quality of this amazing brand.

Finally, any last minute holiday shoppers will appreciate her Christmas wish list with its cute selection of girdles, bras, and high-waisted knickers!

Bust-Friendly Clothing at A Sophisticated Pair

Hello Ladies,

In my previous blog, I mentioned some exciting fashion news for the store.  Long-time readers will know that I fell in love with Polish clothing company BiuBiu after I was able to finally—after years of fruitless searching—find a button-front to fit my body .  Later, I fell in love with two of their dresses.  In fact,  a quick search of the web yields a cornucopia of positive reviews for BiuBiu designs with Georgina of Fuller Figure Fuller Bust reviewing some of their latest knit tops.

Kinga of BiuBiu and I have been discussing the potential to bring her beloved brand to Sophisticated Pair, and she’s given me some details on which styles would be available for us to import.  What I would like to do is gauge interest about the brand itself as well as what styles you love.  Our initial order will most likely focus on button-fronts because I feel those style staples are the areas where busty ladies struggle the most; however, I am happy to order from the styles listed below too.  Considering this will be a relationship with an International vendor, I’m expecting a few hiccups along the way, but overall, I’m excited about the prospect of bringing this curve-friendly brand into the store.

For reference, here are the BiuBiu Size Charts which are pretty true-to-size.  The first size chart is for their fitted clothing while the second is for the knit or stretchier clothing.

And here are the styles available.  Continue reading

Biu Biu: The Next Chapter

Hello Ladies,

After my previous success with BiuBiu, imagine my delight when I checked my Facebook status stream on July 4th to find they had a free US shipping promotion underway.  Since I first started perusing the collection, there were two dresses I kept eying, but I wanted to test the quality and fit before overbuying.  Needless to say, they made their way to my shopping cart, and in less than a week and half (!) arrived at my doorstep.  Well, my store’s doorstep, but I digress.  What captured my attention?  The Ponti in Green:

Originally, I was going to purchase this dress in navy, but I realized that I have two navy dresses (plus a cobalt blue one) and don’t have any green clothes.  I’m not sure why as I love the color, but I guess I never find much in clothing that works for me.  With the Ponti, the deep emerald-meets-evergreen quality of the color seemed perfect for my pale skin and dark hair;  however, the unique neckline and sharp tailoring harkened to some of the Victoria Beckham dresses I have drooled over from afar and ultimately sold me on the design.

In my last round of orders, I wisely purchased what  the size chart recommended based on my measurements (40.5″-28″-40.5″), which was a 38BB/BBB.  However, they were sold out in this style, so I gambled with the 36BB/BBB since the draped front seemed like it would allow extra room for the hips and tummy.  Fortunately, the size fits perfectly:

Not only does this dress allow extra room for my boobage in the front, but there is also space in the rear.  Usually, dresses bunch up in the back because of my butt, but this one hugs the curves beautifully.  Furthermore, the fabric weight is light enough for hot temperatures but thick enough to work in winter too, and I can’t be happier with the quality of the stitching and construction.

I was also pleased to see a discreet side zipper—so discreet I didn’t realize it had one until I put it on—which was a nice change from the Liverpool.  Now, if I am being honest, the bust does pull a teensy bit, but I’m happy with the size and fit.  If I had one concern with the Ponti, it was going to be whether the draping at the waist was flat enough so as not to create a puff of fabric in the front, which it doesn’t.  If you have a bit of a tummy, I actually think this will work perfectly to camouflage it.  Finally, I do have one small quibble.  The back vent is a touch high and shows more leg than I am comfortable with for work, but this is a simple fix I’ve done on most of my pencil skirts.

With the bar set so high by my love for the Ponti, I was curious how my next dress was going to pan out:  the Zanzibar.

Anyone who knows me personally knows I have a thing for animal prints (note what I’m standing on in all these pics), and I really liked the Zanzibar from the moment I saw it.  However, I’m a bit gun shy with prints on dresses, and this wasn’t a muted dip-your-toe-in-the-water print at all.  The Zanzibar practically screams “Look at ME!”, but, again, I gambled thinking that I could always tone it down with accessories.  Wouldn’t ya know it?  This is my favorite of the two:

When I put this dress on, I felt fierce, ferosh, fashionable, and fantastic . . . immediately!  I’m a sucker for beautiful dresses, and I’ve tried a lot, but only rarely do I find one that makes me this happy and confident.  Since they had my standard 38BB/BBB in this style, I played it safe, which was a wise decision.  The fabric on this dress is thinner than the Liverpool or Ponti, and the cut feels smaller.  A 36BB/BBB would not have worked here!  This is not a forgiving dress.  You need VPL proof undies at minimum, and it’s very body conscious (although the length keeps the look demure).  The print is also (obviously) bold and not for the faint of heart.  In fact, I feel like people will either love it or hate it.  Fortunately, I’m in the former category.

One nice touch I love is that the wrap top is actually stitched together so that it doesn’t necessarily require a cami underneath, which is what I expected.  However, if you love to show some cleavage, the stitches look like they can be removed easily.  Of course, I haven’t gotten to my favorite part:  the back.  There’s nothing special about it per se other than when I turned to the side to evaluate my profile, I was like:  “POW!  Hello Booty!  And how are you today?”  As I mentioned with the Ponti, these dresses fit all of your curves.  I don’t know what I like more:  The fact that my bust isn’t smooshed and restricted or that I don’t have bunching in the back where my butt is messing with the line of the dress.  My photog snapped me in the process of joking about how much I like the “POW!” effect of the dress:

Another great purchase from BiuBiu!  Here’s how I styled it for work today:

Have you ordered from them yet?  No??  What are you waiting for??

P.S.  I scored a sample Campbell & Kate shirt yesterday from their first run that I’ll be reviewing when it arrives.

Biu Biu Arrived

Hello Ladies,

After spotlighting Biu Biu two weeks ago, I knew I wanted to place an order and try some of their bust (and wallet!) friendly designs.  While perusing their website, I felt like the proverbial kid in the candy shop as there were so many items I wanted to order; however, I exercised restraint since I had never previously tested their sizing or quality.  To overcome temptation, I consoled myself with the promise that if the clothes worked for me, I could always order more.  Ultimately, I bought the Liverpool Dress in Honey:

and the Vanity Fair Button-Front in Pink.

This combination would allow me test the structured and knit offerings of the brand for size consistency.  Let’s start with the dress!

My initial attraction to the Liverpool dress was its quirky, 60s mod vibe which is right up my fashion alley.  Furthermore, the dress seemed like it would not only lend itself well to layering but also be one of those perfect season-less designs equally at home in summer or winter.  After doing some research (including scoping out June of Braless in Brasil’s review), I decided to order the 38BBB (For reference, I am 5’6.5″ tall, and my current measurements are 40.5″/28″/41″):

More of a mustard than a honey, the color of the dress is slightly different in person, but I still love it and find the shade flattering on my pale skin.  Never treading in “bumblebee” territory, the black accents complement the yellow and add the right amount of edge to the basic cut of the dress.  Interestingly, the exposed zipper in the back is not functional.  Aesthetically, I love a bold exposed zipper, but then I do actually like to be able to use it.  To put the dress on, you need to slide it over your head, which works fine, but I would have preferred a side or back zip.  Considering the dress is only $43, I was extremely pleased with the fabric quality and find it to be far superior to some of the dresses I’ve paid $80+ for in the past.  Not to mention, the fit is spot-on, and I feel like it runs true to their size chart.  My back and shoulders don’t pull on the dress while the fabric on the bust lays smooth.  Meanwhile, the garment nips in sharply at the waist before flaring out at the hips to create a flattering a-line silhouette.

Sadly, my only caveat with this gorgeous dress is the length.  When I purchased the Liverpool, I knew it would be shorter than my other dresses—a feature I liked as it would enable me to wear flats without stunting my shorter legs.  From the front, I feel the coverage is appropriate, but from the rear?  Eh, not so much:

I cannot bend over in this dress at all . . .  unless I want to expose which of my matching sets I’m wearing!  As a result, I can’t wear this dress to work, but I am contemplating whether I could have a band of black fabric added to the bottom.  Or, I may return it for one of the other, longer dresses I loved.

Now to the button-front!  As I mentioned in an older blog, I went on a button-front quest a few years ago to find one that would actually cover my bust.  While I bought some fairly good options, the process was laborious and tedious, and if I’m being completely honest, the deigns don’t fit my waist nearly as much as I would have liked.  To add insult to injury, the buttons pull when I move, which requires frequent adjusting.  Thus, I was cautiously optimistic that this would fit (although I plan on replacing my white button-fronts with a Campbell & Kate when the time comes).

Again, I went with the 38BBB, and as soon as I successfully hooked that troublesome button (you ladies know the one), I was in love.  Then, when the waist darted back so perfectly, I was unable to contain the goofy smile of delight that spread across my face.  With shirt shopping, my three problem areas are shoulders, bust, and waist as I always feel like I never get enough room in the two former and too much room in the latter.  This is the best fitting button-front I have ever owned.  While the shoulder area is a touch snugger than I usually buy, the stretch fabric allows me to move my arms freely and comfortably.  The bust buttons and stays closed without gaping even when I move, meaning I no longer need to worry about flashing a glimpse of my bra.  As if I couldn’t be happier, the waist narrows like it was tailor-made for my body before flaring out again to give room for the hips.  Fantastic!

Beyond the impressive fit, I can’t say enough about the beautiful color and the quality materials.  I loathe how so many button-fronts are made from thinner cotton that borders on sheer, but the Vanity Fair cotton feels thick and structured.  Moreover, the square buttons are a unique twist as are the angular collar and cuffs.  Of course, my favorite element is the slight v-neckline as I feel like it’s a less stuffy alternative to your standard button-front.  I’m always opening up my button-fronts to create an open neck (and to alleviate the stress on the buttons), which necessitates a cami.  Not so with this one!

Overall, I am incredibly satisfied with my Biu Biu purchase and will be ordering from them in the future!

Saturday Spotlight: Biu Biu

Hello Ladies,

June of the fabulous blog Braless in Brasil has recommended Biu Biu in the comments section of our blog before because they specialize in designing clothes for curves.  Until now, I’ve never had a chance (or in some cases, I just forgot) to check out what they had to offer.  Today, after reading her “Bust Friendly News” blog, I fell in lust with this gorgeous maxi dress:

When I saw that it was from Biu Biu, I immediately headed to their website to start browsing, and I was impressed with the selection this small Polish company has to offer.  Ordinarily, I’m a bit hesitant to order internationally, but this dress has me wavering:

The feedback I’ve read about the company is overwhelmingly positive, and the prices are fantastic.  Not to mention, the shipping costs seem pretty fair too.  Those of you who have ordered from Biu Biu (specifically stateside ladies), how fast was their shipping?  Orders I’ve placed from UK stores typically take about two weeks, and I was hoping shipping from Poland would be comparable.

Happy Shopping!
