Curves Expo: Panache Superbra

Hello Everyone,

Panache’s Superbra line, while an excellent source for basic bras and crowd-pleasing solid colors, has never inspired that “gotta have it now” feeling for me.  However, last season, the established brand made positive changes to its core lineup, a trend I am happy to report continues for fall.  In the upcoming AW14 collection, Panache underwent a much-needed revival, ditching many of their traditional full-cup, full-coverage designs and including a mix of plunges, balconies, and new t-shirt bras designed to flatter a variety figures.  Older, fit-prone styles hit the chopping block while others were updated to reflect the changing and growing needs of their customers.   More bras are available in 28 bands even if it is, admittedly, not enough, and cup sizes have expanded for many styles too.  By the time my dad and I saw Panache at the Curves Expo, our brains were overloaded with selection and saturated with certain trends.  Nevertheless, Panache pulled a breathy “Wow” from my lips because of my two personal favorites from the entire show—one of which single-brandedly changed my mind about bodysuits.

Andorra in Powder and Scarlet (UPDATE: Plunge in Powder is Cancelled!)

Andorra_Plunge Andorra_Plunge_2 Andorra_Balcony

  • Style:  Underwired Balcony Bra with Side Sling, Underwired Plunge Bra
  • Sizes Available:  Balcony — 28-40D-J, Plunge — 28-38D-H
  • Panty Options:  Short
  • Bra Price(s):  $62
  • Panty Price(s):  $34
  • Basic Colors:  Pearl and Black
  • Release Date:  Powder — July 2014, Scarlet — October 2014
  • Sophisticated Pair Comments:    The stretch-lace top cup contours well across breast types and is forgiving of weight fluctuations, while the side sling and stiffer lace bottom provide excellent lift.  However, the plunge bra often creates fit problems for women in the G+ cup size range since the stretch lace along the center gore does not always keep breast tissue contained with movement.

Sports Top (not pictured) and Capri Pant

  • Sizes Available: 28-38DD-H, 30-38D-H, 40D-GG

  • Basic Colors:  None
  • Release Date:  July 2014
  • Sophisticated Pair Comments:    The capri pant features a pocket on the interior for you to store your cell phone or music player while you workout.

If there is one area in which Panache truly excels, it is in their active wear collection.  While every booth we visited was busy hocking their own “unique” variation (aka rip-off of the original Panache) in an attempt to cut into their market share, Panache was content to expand into a wireless option as well as a bra top and capri pants with nifty cell phone holder.  Their colors are always fresh for each season, and it’s easy to see why they continue to dominate the market.  Even the new wireless version of the Sports Bra looks amazing and provided the same support on the model as the underwired.

Beyond sporting wear, my customers and I are also fans of Panache’s use of stretch lace in styles like Jasmine, Envy, Andorra, and Clara.  The flexibility of the fabric contours beautifully across bust shapes without sacrificing support.  Envy sports a gorgeous dark purple this season, but the bodysuit is truly the showstopper.  The stretch lace continues across the backside, and the convenient snaps in the gusset not only make the bodysuit wearable for everyday but also give multiple options for torso length.  Furthermore, the gorgeous Clara was one of my absolute favorites from the show.  It blends a sophisticated, traditional design with a luxurious, upscale quality that makes it seem ripped from Fauve or Masquerade instead of the moderately priced Superbra.  Interestingly, as much as I loved the Clara and Envy, I absolutely hate one of the prints for the Jasmine.  The animal print version I can take or leave, but the other print reminds me of upholstery.  It even has a texture reminiscent of 1950s couch, and it also has the distinction of being one of the few bras in the show I outright loathed.

Rumeur also has the sophisticated touch of Clara with the mix of purple and gold, but the fit on the bra is too close to Tango and has not been well-received here.  Speaking of Tango, the practically trademark style is here in a vibrant scarlet along with perpetual Superbra players Fern and Tango Accenti.  The Porcelain series has also been given a makeover with the new Elan.  Whether we’ll all be as enthusiastic as the name implies remains to be seen, but the catalog claims there are “8 points of difference” between the fits.  Porcelain Grace is back too in the hopes of swaying some of the Freya Deco fans, but the Porcelain series has always been a little shallow, especially at the bottom of the cup.  Perhaps the new versions corrected this error, but I saw the issue on all of the models at the show.  Still, t-shirt bras in higher cup sizes and smaller bands are in short supply, so another option couldn’t hurt!

Great preview, but: Ughh everything I want doesn’t come in 28s!! When oh when will they expand the jasmine and envy out to 28s?? And the floris looks like how Cleo *should* be, the cut is so similar.. But again, 28s?? The Clara is stunning as well, but same issue.

Abbi, the fact that Envy is not available in 28 backs KILLS me! It is such a great fit, and I know a lot of women would really benefit from that stretch lace top with forward projection. It wouldn’t bother me so much if Cleo used a stretch lace on one of their styles, but not everyone can fill the top of Cleo’s cups well. *sigh*

I totally understand why Superbra doesn’t have a ton of 28’s given the availability in Masquerade and Cleo… but Envy and Jasmine are SO popular. I feel like that would only be a positive decision 😛

Exactly! I get not offering a 28 in Fern, for example, but if you can do it in the mediocre (at best) Tango then why not the stellar Jasmine/Envy?

That purple Envy is so gorgeous…. why must I only like dark colored bras, so glad I have started shifting my wardrobe to accommodate.

I notice all the pictures seem to have 2-hooks in the back.. is this a change or just the size of the model? Cause I am fairly attached to my 3-hooks.

Also finally truth time do you think Porcelain Elan would work for me because I would be very interested in trying one in a 38GG or H??

Also also I love all their sports bra colors though I don’t think I can justify buying another one right now. They are so fun and when I see the pictures I am all yeah I would work out if I was wearing that.

Ashley, I think it’s easier for the dark colored bras tend to be more eye-catching than the lighter ones, so don’t feel bad. 🙂 Plus, light colored tops are so thin now anyway. Who cares that we live in the south? Black clothes for everyone!

As for the hook-and-eye closures: It’s a result of the size of the models. They were saving the model shown in the beige Rumeur for Sculptresse, but I would have liked to see her model some of the Superbra and Cleo styles to show the difference. Of course, Cleo is *always* two hooks. If you want to try the Elan, you know I’ll order it for you, but I honestly can’t tell you for sure if it will work. The old Porcelain? Heck no! And you’d need the H cup for sure. It was designed very shallow at the base, so most women had extra space at the bottom near the underwire (like the model in the Porcelain Viva). Also, the underwire shape was odd and would tack in the center but gap at the bottom of the band below the center gore, almost like the shape of the underwire at the base was not consistent with women’s ribcages. But, as the catalog says: “There are 8 points of difference!” So maybe they fixed it. Maybe. Much as I hate to say it, but the Elomi Bijou is only $4 more expensive, and it’s going over a lot better here. The fit is fantastic, and it has a racer-back option.

Clara is so lovely, and the black/gold is so gorgeous. I hear it’s pretty shallow on the bottom, though? I fit Andorra but often get the annoying fabric fold in other bras.
The geo print sports bra is almost eye destroying. Per that, I will send you an email with pre-order details if it’s possible.

Clara is definitely a little shallow on the bottom, but it reminds me a lot of the Andorra. If Andorra works for you, it could be worth at least trying Clara to see if it will fit too. 🙂

I’m a super fan of the Sports Bra and tha new Geo print is so gorgeous I will have to buy even though I don’t need another one!!
From the others I’m exicted about the Tango Accenti as I’m not a big fan of the print in the original Tango.

I love the Geo print too, and I think the sports bras is one of the most comfortable bras I have ever tried. It’s my weekend bra 🙂
