Product Review: BiuBiu Marsala Dress

Hello Ladies,

As an avid fan of all things BiuBiu, I was ecstatic to see they were releasing new styles for spring and summer.  While I love dresses like the Viena and Noli, I find long-sleeve dresses to be impractical for summer, which left me unable to purchase anything new for my closet.  Then the gorgeous Marsala dress and Venice tops debuted with their lighter fabrics and short-sleeves!  For today’s blog, I’ll be covering the Marsala dress, but tune in later this week for a review of the Venice.

Marsala

Sizing:  My measurements of 41.5″-29″-41.5″ put me firmly in the 38BB/BBB category, but in the past I’ve often bought both the 36BB/BBB and the 38BB/BBB.  Given the thinner fabric, I opted for the 38 which fits pretty well, but I would have preferred a tighter fit at the waist, especially without a belt.  If you’re between sizes, I recommend selecting the smaller one.

Fit:  As expected, the Marsala hugs the curvy figure beautifully.  There is ample room in the bust without creating any pull lines across the center, and my broad shoulders have plenty of space to move without tugging the seams.  With a fitted torso design, the Marsala nips in at the waist before softly draping over the tummy and hip region to offer a flattering silhouette.  An open v-neckline shows some skin without requiring a camisole or becoming inappropriate for work, and in the back, the dress contours to my shape for a sexy rear profile.  However, the fitted top portion of the dress ends rather low on the waist.  I am over 5’6″ with a long torso, and the waist seam hits me rather well, allowing the pleating to fall straight down and softly accentuate my figure.  Petite or short-waisted women may find the pleating sits too low and creates an odd bagging near the inseam area.  Not to mention, the length of the dress itself is longer too, sitting slightly below the knee.

Because of the pleating, the Marsala may be better suited for women with a straighter tummy profile (not necessarily six pack abs) because the pleats may inadvertently create a rounded stomach from the side.  Even though I love the fit of the dress, I think the Marsala is one of BiuBiu’s harder-to-wear designs and not quite as flattering across body types.

Materials:  I’m a huge fan of natural fibers for clothing because they breath when temperatures rise but also feel soft against the skin, and the cotton used for the Marsala truly impresses.  In many ways, the fabric feels like your perfect worn in tee shirt, but the weight is thick enough to conceal bra seams as well as any lumps or bumps.  Instead of clinging to the curves, it gently hugs them to show the silhouette without being quite so unforgiving.  Moreover, all of the stitching and seam work looks sturdy enough to withstand wear.

Design:  One of my favorite purchases from BiuBiu was the Ponte dress in green, but the heavier fabric and longer sleeves mean it often sits in my closet during hotter months.  When I saw the Marsala, I was struck by the similarities and was excited for a style conducive to warmer temperatures.  As a big fan of lace and lace prints, I fell in love with the romantic but sophisticated vibe of the dress, and in person the pattern reads at once more muted and more intricate.  Neutral colors add to the versatility, and I will be able to transition the Marsala across the seasons.

Other Comments:  So far, I have worn the dress twice, and I adore it.  As I mentioned, a smaller size would be a bit better because I cannot wear the dress without a belt, but the design and materials are so comfortable.  In the morning, I can put on the Marsala and then forget about it, even on busy days at the shop.  The neutral colored print provides the perfect backdrop for experimenting with accessories and layering pieces, making this dress more than one trick pony in the style department!

Overall Grade:  A-

This is a very nice looking dress as well as the green one you displayed. I would love to have both of them however, I am short (5′ 2 1/2″) but have a short torso and long legs and still don’t think it would work for me, what is your opinion?

Thank you! I think this dress is going to be a bit long for you since we both know you are shorter than 5’2″. 😛 Plus, I think the waist will sit low on the hips. I’d recommend trying one of their shorter styles or maybe something straighter than you can have hemmed.

Funny how different we all are. I measure 41/33/41 and the dress did not suit me at all. It’s not that it made my stomach look fat, it’s more that it didn’t show off my shape. Yet it seemed to cling to me at the same time. Somehow it just didn’t work. At all!!!

Lynn, I can totally understand what you mean there. No dress is going to work for everyone, but I feel like the Marsala, gorgeous though it may be, is definitely a dress that will be difficult to wear. I think I am going to get mine hemmed about 2″ to expose more of the knee. I think the proportions will be better, especially with flats.

Yes, I thought it was strangely unflattering on my body. I can’t quite figure out why, but somehow it just didn’t work. On the website it seemed like it would be a really flattering dress on everyone, but clearly not. I think I do better with dresses that show off my waist.

Lynn, if I had to give a reason why the dress isn’t as universally flattering, I’d say it’s the overall length proportions. The waist itself hits lower than the Ponte as does the hemline, and I feel like it’s going to act like a drop-waist on most women. I lucked out on account of my longer torso and height, but other women may find it hits at all the wrong places.

Do you mean that you are long waisted? I am short waisted, so maybe that is the issue at play here.

I’d say my waist sits about average in relation to my torso, but my torso itself is kind of long (meaning on the flip side, I have short legs). I think that’s what helping here with the proportions of the dress.

Ah okay. I have long legs. Plus, being a figure 8/vase shape (slight variant on the hourglass, but we store weight on the tummy rather than the hips) the waist its at my largest point. 🙂

Thanks for helping me identify the issue so that I can steer clear of similar styles. 🙂

I bought this dress, I’m 5’2″ and it fits me perfectly, I love it. Have just discovered Biubiu and most of their clothes fit me where the model is the shorter lady, have not sent anything back yet, ordered six things! I wanted this colour but unfortunately they don’t do in the 36B/BB at the moment, have got it in the blue though. Love it!

Karen, I do like how BiuBiu uses the models with different heights/figures as it makes it easier to find out whether a style will work for you. I love the new red version they did as well which Georgina from Fuller Figure Fuller Bust was rocking. So far, I only returned one thing to BiuBiu, and that was because the length was too short for me. They’re a great company for sure!

I ordered this dress only on Monday after having seen your review. Today it arrived and it is really beautiful! It fits perfect, narrow at the waist and ample enough at the bust – which I never had for years. Normal shirts are always too narrow there or too straight and do not show the waist. The fabric is very nice. It is so fantastic to try one dress and it fits. I also bought a shirt in lavender which is a similar fabric and fits perfect, too.
    Thanks for your review.

Anna, that is fantastic! I’m so glad it worked out perfectly for you. Which top did you get? I want to get one of the new faux wrap tops with the ruching (can’t recall the name), and the fabric seems like it might be similar.

I got the portofino in lavender. I would have preferred the white one as I saw it on another blog, but it was already sold out. I wore it yesterday and it was a bit challenging…

The Portofino is the top I was considering. Would you mind elaborating on why it was challenging? Since I basically work retail all day, I do not need any challenging clothes! 😀

The portofino shirt is narrow. It is a stretch material so it really models my bust and my waist and I am not used to it. My shirts from Pepperberry are cotton and a bit more loose, also most of my other shirts. But nevertheless I liked it, already washed twice and it did not change.

Anna, thanks for reporting in! I plan on ordering that as well as the new faux wrap shirt they released this weekend.
