Spring 2015: Freya Lingerie

Hello Everyone,

Despite the chill in the air and the overcast skies, I want to inject a little daring and a lot of bold color into your life today with the Winter/Spring Freya preview.  For Fall, Freya expanded their wheelhouse to include new basic styles like Rapture and Icon while focusing on eye-popping, electrifying color, and for Spring, the expansion continues with a new t-shirt bra (available up to a HH cup!), a revamp of an oldie but goodie (Arabella), and a farmer’s market worthy assortment of mouth-watering, fruit-inspired colors!

  • Basic Colors: Black and Beige
  • Bra Prices: $68
  • Panty Prices: $30
  • Release Date: May 2015
  • A Sophisticated Pair says: It’s exciting to see Freya releasing a new molded cup option (finally!), and I’m especially excited to see this bra is available up to a HH cup in certain bands. My sales rep says the shape and height of the center gore are also designed to help women who experience significant gaping at the top of the Deco, regardless of size.

In addition to expanding bra styles, Freya will introduce a coordinating panties, called “Fancies,” for the various color groups of the season.  Available in both a short and a Brazilian, Fancies feature super soft stretch lace and contrasting banded tops.  Fancies are a new twist for Freya, enabling customers to purchase slightly cheaper ($26 to $28) faux-match coordinates for multiple bras in the collection.  In the future, I would like to see them lower the price ($18 maybe?) and offer a panty program (i.e., buy a certain amount for a lower group price.)  Still, progress is progress!

Fancies

Returning to the collection, it’s pretty clear Freya still has their neon bright switch flipped, which is not necessarily a criticism.  I am a fan of neon colors, but not everyone appreciates such high wattage hues as watermelon, papaya, and bubblegum.  The new Deco Zest is the literal standout for brightness for the collection, so bright that you may need to wear sunglasses to view it.  Promotional shots can be deceptive, and here Zest channels a fresh, sunny yellow, but the bra is more green in person.  When I was 15, I went through a crazy phase where I painted my nails this highlighter worthy yellow/green.  At first, I thought they were super cool, but then I realized my nails looked like shining beacons in every photo of me.  There could be twenty people in the shot, and the eye zeroed in on my nails.  Zest is that color, right down to the same hue and saturation.  Now, this blog is not about shaming taste, so if neon brights are your passion, go for it!  I only want to be clear on the actual color to avoid any potential confusion or disappointment later.  In addition to the solid colors, Freya also offers other bold options like Parade, Firecracker, and Ingite, which as their names imply, explode with tightly packed saturation.  Ignite is my personal favorite for the collection.  I was not crazy about the fall variation because of the intense background color, but grounding the multicolor print on a white background with neon accents smartly toned down the bra while preserving the unique, fun element of the original.

While neon was the dominant trend, Freya also showed a subdued side with entries like Deco Charm, Darling, and Spotlight as well as Fifi and Eden .  There’s a more romantic, vintage quality to these pieces that feels sweet and totally appropriate for spring.  Furthermore, I was excited by the inclusion of more tastefully sheer options like Siren and Starlet  Siren re-imagines the wildly successful Arabella bra and offers a new twist with Sunkissed which is designed to look like a tattoo more than a bra.  Starlet, on the other hand, is an attempt to carry the aesthetic of now defunct sister line Fauve into a more wallet-friendly Freya price point.  The plunge balcony is purely Freya, but the vertical seam cup bra reminds me of Fantasie’s Allegra, a design straight from earlier Fauve.  Hopefully, the lift and support will warrant including this gorgeous new entry into the canon of basics.

Freya also has begun adding more chemises into the mix to match their sets as well as bra-sized lingerie pieces like babydolls.  Deco Darling would make a lovely bridal alternative to the more generic Shape collection, and both Icon and Rapture are perfect for women wanting less traditional lingerie.  Of course, a $78 price tag is a bit high to me, especially when Affinitas, Parfait, and iCollection have them available for less than $65.  If the chemises had built-in support, I would pay the added cost, but as is, I would rather spend the money on a truly luxurious piece from Tia Lyn.

Finally, the debut of a new molded cup t-shirt bra has me salivating.  T-shirt bras are the bread and butter of the shop, but it can be challenging to find a style which fits well across a variety of breast and body shapes.  In some of the lower cup sizes, we have a lot of great options, but particularly in the FF+ market, the selection dwindles.  The new Idol is intended to have the same great rounded, forward projection of the Deco, but the center gore is raised to prevent spillage.  The cup shape is also more of a balcony with less height at the tops to help women who experience gaping with the normal Deco.  And speaking of the brand’s flagship style, all future Deco styles not only will have the edge of the cup sewn down to improve fit, but they are looking at adding the J-hook to all of them.  It’s an exciting move on Freya’s part!  My only quibble is the pricing.  Idol is another $69 t-shirt bra, and nearly every Deco has ticked upward of $65 as well.  It’s frustrating to see the price escalation, particularly during such a tough economy, and it makes me wonder if the Eveden group is not trying to position themselves as a more expensive brand.  For comparison, the upscale Panache Black line (formerly Masquerade) has bras in the $78-$85 range—not a hue difference is there?

Erica

P.S.  This is totally unrelated to the spring collection, but instead is a question to Eveden:  What the heck did you guys do to the catalogs?  I appreciate the cut-out shots, but they’re so small you can’t see any of of the details.  Go back to putting the bras on a model for the big shot and then do details.  All of my customers are holding the catalogs right next to their eye to see the pattern.

I too am always excited about more choices for t-shirt bras in the G+ market! Currently I can wear a Deco, but as I get older and my tissue gets softer, I think I’ll need something with a higher center gore (Cleo’s Maddie and Curvy Kate’s Starlet both work for that but neither are perfect). Spacer fabric? And going up to HH? Top marks for effort!

Cost of living/inflation is increasing at 2%, which means I expect to see manufacturers raise the price a dollar every year and a half or so. The regular Deco cost $60 in 2011, and still does so. I guess they make up the difference with the newer models (rebel, charm, spotlight, vibe, etc)? Of course this could also be dependent on British inflation as well as the exchange rate. Do you know if the price is set in the UK or US?

I am just hoping Idol lives up to the name! A lot of the Eveden t-shirt bras produced lately have been amazing though, so I am hoping this trend continues. The FF+ cups really need some more smooth options that fit well. Like you said, Maddie and Starlet still have fit issues, and I hate when people are forced to settle on something that’s just okay.

Also, that’s an interesting point about inflation, and I could totally see a $1-2 increase. What bugs me is that so many of the new items are $9+ higher. I’ve polled a lot of my customers, and they would be fine with less details on some of the bras to bring the overall price down, even if the basic bra was only available in beige and black. Freya better watches it back on this front because there are a lot of companies coming in to make gorgeous well-fitting bras at cheaper prices. Sine we started carrying Comexim, Parfait, and b.tempt’d, my Freya pre-orders from season to season have been on the decline. Also, as far as I know, the prices are originally set in the UK, and then they are adjusted up here for importing. The import process usually adds between $8-$15 to the bra’s retail price depending on the manufacturer. 🙂

Thanks for the information about pricing. I hear spacer fabric is more expensive, which is why Rebecca and Amelia are $70+. I don’t know whether that’s actually true for the manufacturer, though. I too would rather have fewer details and a lower price for the vast majority of my bras. I understand Fantasie wanting to fill in Fauve’s gaps with more expensive pieces, but since Freya’s raising prices as well, the young lady without much retirement savings could find Cleo more attractive.

Parfait does have the advantage that there are no import duties, so I’m inclined to buy American. In England, the Charlotte bra comes out to 30 pounds, or $49, and the briefs to 12 pounds, or $19.4. That’s more expensive in England than most Curvy Kate and Panache bras, and just about $5-6 less than the basic Deco. That’s why I’ve been surprised to see Parfait getting plenty of love on the English blogs.

Quality spacer fabric is definitely a little higher, but ya know? b.tempt’d makes a fabulous one up to a DDD cup for $39, and Wacoal has a few options under $60 too. I think what eats up some of the extra cost is the embroidery and details (plus importing). Now, the new Eclipse does something I haven’t seen before but think is pretty cool. They pad the hook-and-eye closures so they rest comfortably on the back. It’s thoughtful features like that where Eveden excels. But, you’re very right that Freya used to be for the younger woman with less disposable income, and now it seems they have positioned themselves away. Most Cleo bras are under $55, so I can see them stealing some Freya business.

Oh, my goodness. I definitely need to save for some monies for some fun bras! Thank you for sharing, Erika! =]

I like the Freya Deco, but think I’d need a smaller band size and maybe a smaller cup? I reeeeeeally like the Affinitas Parfait. It’s super cute and my husband likes it, too! =] The cups are a teeny bit big, so I think I may be more comfortable with a smaller band size.

Thank you for sharing your vast bra knowledge!

“designed to help women who experience significant gaping at the top of the Deco” ….um, what??? This is infuriating!!! They’re already making Deco and Deco based bras like this! I’ve been pestering Freya for quite some time, pretty much ever since they started putting that trim on the cup edge and reducing the overall size of the cup and not being honest about that last part, to start offering a t-shirt bra for those of us who fit original Deco just fine and happen to not have a problem with the cup gaping. One that offers lift with center pull straps, higher coverage and a lighter weight foam. At least they answered the last 2 requests. But seriously…all the women who spill out of Deco are not going to fit in one that’s closed at the top any more than the current Deco styles.

What gets me is a lot of the other women who complain about gaping are the ones who fit Freya’s unlined styles with no problem. Because those bras are not designed for top fullness. Deco was. It’s really too bad they’ve swayed a company to their needs and further instilling the fact that Freya is a one woman brand.

Sorry for the rant. Having to need a smaller fitting 28 with cups that are narrow and deep enough for a projected yet full all around shape leaves me with nothing for options except my old Decos, and if I ever desired again, an ill fit from a Victoria’s Secret 34DD. At least those come in a hell of a lot more options and colorways.

Heather, your complaints about the changes to the Deco are spot-on and very common for women needing that more open cup shape. I was shocked to see them using the modified shape on all of their new styles because it does create issues for women who loved the original shape. I think they could have easily split the bra into two styles without cannibalizing sales. Personally, I am glad to see they offer the modified shape in the smaller cup sizes as a lot of women in the C-E market with shallower breasts never fit the Deco well, but I don’t think it should have been at the expense of the original either. 🙁 It’s very frustrating, particularly because Freya is one of the few options for 28 bands or molded cups in the FF+ range. I do have high hopes for the Icon though because the spacer fabric bras do tend to fit well, but you’re right that it could create issues for women with fullness at the top.

Well said, Heather. This banded cup edge thing needs to stop, Freya! Plus, it creates a terrible silhouette under shirts! Freya, please pay more attention to we who are full-on-top, especially in your unpadded styles. I’m really pulling for Starlet!
